![]() ![]() You can find my detailed hands-on impressions here, though here’s the short of it: We haven’t had a chance to do a full review of the Samsung Odyssey headset yet, but I did get to spent a fair bit of time with the near-final headset at its unveiling last month. ![]() Our Thoughts on the Samsung Odyssey VR Headset Image courtesy Samsung ![]() Need to know if you computer specs can handle the Odyssey? Download the Windows Mixed Reality PC Check app from Microsoft to make sure your system is up to par. The cable is 13.1 feet (4 meters) long, and terminates in USB 3.0 and HDMI 2.0 plugs. The headset itself weighs a hefty 1.42 pounds (644 grams), which makes it one of the heaviest consumer headsets out there. Despite Microsoft calling the Odyssey (and other Windows VR headsets) “Mixed Reality,” there is no pass-through video or augmented reality functionality from the cameras. Like all the Windows VR headsets to date, the Odyssey includes two front-facing cameras for inside-out tracking, which means you don’t need any external sensors or beacons for head and controller tracking. Unfortunately it lacks the flip-up visor hinge that the other Windows VR headsets share.Įquipped with Fresnel lenses, Samsung claims the quoted 110 degree field of view is “one of the widest available on the market.” The Odyssey is also the only Windows VR headset to offer an IPD adjustment to let you dial in the sweet-spot by changing the distance between the lenses, from 60 to 72 mm. The Odyssey is also the only one of the Windows VR headsets (so far) with integrated headphones and a microphone, which gives the headset a leg up in usability. The device lays claim to the highest resolution among the Windows VR headsets, with a pair of 1,440 × 1,600 displays (capable of up to 90Hz) which are OLED (compared to the LCD screen of the others), which typically means richer colors, greater contrast, and potentially less ghosting. Samsung has positioned the Odyssey VR headset as the premium offering among the Windows VR headsets, a handful of which launched initially last month. No mention of price or a European launch. The Samsung Odyssey, the company’s first PC VR headset, is available starting today in several countries, sold via Samsung and Microsoft stores. The Odyssey Z will be available in select countries including Korea and China in April and will launch in the US in Q3. There’s a shortcut to start recording gameplay and another to trigger Silent mode, which brings fan noise to 22 dB. The Odyssey Z weighs 2.4 kg and measures 17.9 mm thickĪdditional specs include stereo 1.5 W speakers, a backlit keyboard with crater keycaps and enough USB ports to hook up a VR headset. Good thing that a 180 W adapter is included in the box. Not that anyone would game on a trackpad.Īnyway, laptop comes with a 54 Wh battery that probably won't last long in gaming mode. ![]() However, all of this squished the keyboard and trackpad together. Two “Z Blade” blower fans keep the heat away from both the top and bottom of the laptop. To make the Odyssey Z only 17.9mm thick and weighing 2.4 kg, Samsung built a “Dynamic Spread Vapor Chamber” that covers both the CPU and GPU. The one thing stopping most gaming laptops from being thin and light is the bulk of the cooling solutions they require. The Samsung Odyssey Z gaming laptop uses a vapor chamber and two blower fans for cooling The laptop can be configured with up to 16 GB of DDR4 RAM and up to 1TB NVMe SSD, the GPU has 6 GB of GDDR5 memory. This is a 15.6” laptop (1080p screen) with a 6-core Intel Core i7 (8th gen) and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060. It’s fairly thin and light for a gaming laptop, but will run cool thanks to Z AeroFlow cooling system with a Z Blade Blower. Samsung occasionally dabbles in gaming laptops and here’s the latest one – the Samsung Odyssey Z. ![]()
